Office Positions –YROLN 2000

The YROLN 2000 committee has appointed the members to the following positions

President: Brian Way (UYSC) Way.Brian.B.J@uysc.vic.edu.au

Secretary: Andrew Ferrier (SERCT) aferrier@serct.vic.edu.au

Neil Gardner (LHS) gardner.neil.n@edumail.vic.gov.au

Budget

Neil presented a copy of the financial statement of the YROLN account. There was a budget surplus of $3000 remaining. The funding formula for supporting the project was discussed. Project funds are used to provide CRT release for two project officers who will work with participating schools one day each week during the life of the project.

Budget formula

It is anticipated that this year’s YROLN project will commence in Term 2 and be completed in Term 3. (20 weeks) The following costs will be incurred

Project Officers = 2x( $185 CRT + $15 =$200 per week)=$400. Total costs for 20 weeks duration ($8000)

Participating schools will be required to pay a levee based on school population numbers, as was the practice in 1999. This was seen as being the most equitable solution for smaller school budgets.

Sponsorship

The issue of supplementing the project’s funding through sponsorship was discussed. Michael Martin (LHS) will seek out guidelines for initiating support from local sponsors and report back to the Committee.

YROLN Direction 2000

Andrew presented a copy of the YROLN mission statement from 1999. The committee agreed that it was important to continue the theme of ‘telling the Yarra Ranges Story’ with a strong focus on the unique social, economic, historical and environmental elements of the Yarra Ranges. The committee also felt that it was important to encourage shared project activities between Yarra Ranges schools and to encourage schools from outside the district to join in if necessary.

Andrew will make contact with Jenny Arms from Distance Education in DEET to seek her advice/ support re developing the necessary skills and strategies.

Project Officer Positions

Peter Johnson resigned his position as project officer due to a promotion. The committee will advertise his position in Term 3. Andrew and Brian will liaise on developing a job description and advertising the position to interested teachers within the Eastern region.

Nina Netherway has expressed interest in continuing her role as project officer. The Committee decided to use the surplus money in the YROLN account to enable Nina to make contact with the participating (and non-participating) schools in the Yarra ranges during Term 1. Her brief will be to promote participation in the YROLN project through ascertaining the curriculum activities, projects and skill needs of these schools and reporting directly to the YROLN 2000 committee. She will liaise with Andrew in completing this task.

Communication

The numbers attending the opening meeting were disappointing. Some concern was expressed about schools reading their emails. The Committee decided to supplement the email communication through

Phone contact with the participating Schools (Responsibility: Nina Netherway –see above)

Presentation at the next Lilydale/Yarra Ranges Principal’s Reference Group Meeting (Andrew and Nina). Andrew will contact Reference Group Convenor Bev Atkinson at Manchester Primary School.

To facilitate communication among the YROLN committee, Andrew has set up a mail list (yroln.committee@serct.vic.edu.au). Members of the Committee are asked to use this email address to share and distribute information regarding the YROLN Project with other committee members.

Participating schools in the YROLN Project can be reached through yroln.schools@serct.vic.edu.au
